Grumpy and Paranoid

Dan is sick and I'm a nervous wreck. I cringe every time he coughs, I run around after him sterilizing light switches and doorknobs over and over. He kept rearranging things in the grocery cart tonight until I felt like screaming, "Quit TOUCHING everything!!!"

I'm four weeks from the marathon and if I get a chest cold now, it's a good possibility that it'll turn into bronchitis and I won't be over it on marathon day. It'll be $100 down the drain if I can't make the race.

This is the main reason why every year I say I'll never sign up for the Houston Marathon again. December and early January are inevitably a time when I'm surrounded by sick people at work and at home and I can't enjoy the season because I'm so busy avoiding people and trying not to touch anything.

Maybe I'll go be a hermit in my studio apartment for the next month.

Oh dear, that sounds so not fun. I hope Dan gets better soon, that you don't catch his bug (or anybody else's), and that you'll be ready and rarin' to go on Marathon Day!

Do you still set goals anymore for marathons, or is it just to have a run that feels good?

I'm contemplating starting training again for next December's Honolulu Marathon, but I haven't quite decided yet.

The Bag Lady can certainly relate to this problem (you may have noticed she is somewhat germ-phobic!) She is hoping you don't catch his bug...or any other bug, so you can run in your marathon.
Moving out sounds perfectly reasonable to the Bag Lady!
Failing that, what you're doing (sterilizing everything after he touches it) is also a good idea. May sound a bit extreme to the normal folk out there, but hopefully it will work and keep you healthy!

Oh, and you weren't actually TOUCHING the shopping cart handle, were you?! Sheesh.
(wash your hands!!)

In "The House Of ...", if Rabbits' Guy was the sick one, it would probably be Rabbits' Guy who would move out for awhile!!!

I hope you avoid it ... having to bail from a race you plan on is certainly a big let down, not to mention the sign-up bucks, which get bigger and bigger. Maybe Houston has much good food!

Aw, I know that feeling very well! Being chronic, though, it gets easier to deal with. :) Just take care as much as you can, and try to relax! Don't wear yourself out with anxiety!

I can appreciate your germaphobia you're going through right now! It always seems to come down to something like that just before a big event. Keep the Purell on hand!

Well, how about a "tag" to brighten you up? The rules, if you chose, are over on our site. Thanks.

Vitamin C and lots of garlic for both of you. Soup with lots of garlic is wonderful for this sort of thing. Also, make some hummus and use lots of green onion, fresh garlic, and lemon juice WITH any pulp that comes from squeezing it. All natural smooth peanut butter works if you don't want to invest in tahini and I use lite soy sauce because of less sodium. Hummus is easy to eat, filling, lots of protein, and the garlic and lemon juice are good for what ails you. Also, keep drinking tons of water and avoid caffeine. I survived many a flu season in theatres and at college in my 30s around all those germy kids that way. :P

Positive thinking helps too. And antiseptic wipes. Stick him in a hazmat suit too for good measure. JIC, don't ya know. :D

I was just going to say what Virginia said. Lots of Vitamin C. It really works. And her recipes sound delicious. I love hummus. Eat it with toasted pita bread--yum!

Good idea on the garlic!

You eat so healthy, I imagine you'd have a pretty powerful immune system--even if you were exposed to something, it might not knock you on your ass like it would some people.

What a great reason to be germ-phobic though.

In Japan they wear these masks when they have colds. Maybe Dan wouldn't wear one but you might could, to keep from breathing in particulates. You can also wear a small bottle of hand sanitizer around your neck on a lanyard. Dude, I'm totally serious. I know how it feels to worry about getting sick before a marathon!
