Unpleasant Surprise

Tonight there was a ginormous, 2" long roach in the bathtub. It was dead, probably thanks to the cat, but that wasn't the point. I'm a tough gal in a lot of ways, but those creatures creep me out. If I were single, I would've contemplated taking showers at the gym as a better option than having to remove said carapace.

But I'm a married woman.

Thanks, Dan. This is why I love you.

Rain Day and Other News

They’ve closed the university on Tuesday for the tropical storm. Whatever. It sounds like a lot of hype to me, but I get a free day off, so I’m not complaining. If not every place in town acts silly and closes, I might even be able to take care of a few errands I wanted to do over the weekend but couldn’t. At the very least I can sleep in a bit and work on some things around here that need doing.

I won’t be able to sleep in by much, though. Our water heater is getting replaced around 9:30 tomorrow morning. It’s leaking steam from a valve somewhere on top and makes quite a racket. It’ll be good to get the whole thing replaced and I’m hoping the new heater will be more efficient and cost us less money.

Cadbury went to the vet today for a checkup and was pronounced healthy. I figured as much, since no one with that much energy could have anything wrong. But it’s good to get a baseline and everyone was happy to meet him. They say we can get him neutered in about two weeks, after he’s had time to finish settling into his new home. Getting snipped will quiet him down a bit, which will be nice.

Cadbury is starting to figure out that the paper litter pellets are not for eating and the hay is. Yay! He ate one of his Timmy cakes and tonight I ordered him some other hays to try from Oxbow. Maybe he’ll pick a favorite.

So that’s all for now. I looked at the latest computer models on Edouard and still see no reason to feel confident we’ll get a direct hit or be on the dirty side of the storm. Tropical systems in this part of the Gulf often take a last-minute bobble to the east, so the fact the models are sending it up the I-45 corridor suggests it’s likely to hit closer to the Texas-Louisiana border, sparing us much of anything in terms of wind and rain. Of course, these storms are unpredictable and the models don’t appear to have been updated in several hours, so we’ll see.

Somebunny isn’t the least bit concerned.

Return to Normalcy

It’s great to be home and getting settled again. Even though this was my easiest vacation yet in terms of quickly being able to find the stuff I needed and always having my own pillow, it’s still fantastic to be home.

Tidbit is doing great. She still wasn’t 100% before we left, but she’s there now! When we brought her home Thursday, she went exploring just like she used to, she did some binkies for us and this morning she came bopping down the hall soon after I got up to run. She poked her head in the bedroom door like she used to, with that look on her face like, “Where’s my breakfast, biped?” Every time I get on the computer, she settles at my feet like a little dog. It’s so great to have her back!

The only thing I need now is for my work situation to stabilize. Although my new boss said I could move some things into my office on Friday if I wanted, I had a lot of errands to catch up on, so I didn’t take her up on it. And with the conference on Monday and Tuesday, it looks like I’ll be “homeless” until Wednesday. It’s a very strange feeling to have no office and no university keys. I realize it makes me rather dull, but I am very work-oriented and this sort of thing leaves me unsettled. But I already have a meeting to go to—on Friday. So I really do have a job. Just not an office, keys, a computer, or anything else that makes it feel real. But this will be remedied soon. I’m trying to remember to enjoy this little interlude of being employed but with no responsibilities, since it’s likely the last I can expect before retirement.

I went for a long run this morning, and let’s just say I wasn’t in Pagosa Springs any more! I didn’t miss the hills much, but I started out the door with temps and humidity in the high 80s and was dripping before I’d finished the first mile. I did eighteen miles—a little short of what I would’ve liked, but my body was craving the dry air of the west and my heat tolerance was a little off. I suppose it didn’t help that it was 90 when I got home, with a heat index of 97. Pretty brutal when the humidity keeps your sweat from cooling you. I’ll get my tolerance back quickly, though. The conditions around here are never fun, but one can learn to tolerate them.

But overall, it’s nice to be back, especially with my two furry friends so healthy and happy.

Be it ever so humid, there’s no place like home!

Home, Potential Home!

We may be getting a house!

Okay, we wouldn’t actually be buying the house. We can’t afford to buy in any of the areas we want, and we don’t want a mortgage so badly that we’re willing to endure a long commute to get it. But one of Dan’s professor friends owns a house just a couple blocks from campus in a neighborhood that’s very popular with other professors. It’s for rent at a price not much higher than what we pay now, and it has a garage apartment we could sub-let to a grad student if we wanted to, bringing our monthly rent significantly lower than what we pay now. We’d probably use the garage apartment as an office or studio, though.

We’re going to try to see it this weekend, if something can be arranged with the current tenant.

The only problem is that we have a lease where we’re at now, and the lease isn’t up until next spring. But this is a fantastic opportunity, and it won’t hurt to explore what our options are.

I’m already having pleasant fantasies of being able to walk to work every day and having my professor friends for neighbors. The university has a fantabulous rec center, which would make up for no longer living in a place with an on-site gym. Campus events like plays, lectures and concerts would be no big deal to go to-- just put some shoes on and stroll on over. I could go home from work for lunch, or a mid-day nap. And I could run around campus on short-run days, and use the nearby bayou trails for long runs.

So I’m feeling cautiously excited about this opportunity.

In other news, Thomma tagged me for a meme a few days ago. I haven’t forgotten, I’m just saving it for a day when I want to post but haven’t got much to say!

Recent Workouts
Sunday: 2 hour spin, abs, upper body
Monday: 30 minute elliptical
Today: 3.5 mile run

Home Again!

We got home Saturday evening to find the power off, due to a storm. But after the light company repaired the transformer, we still didn’t have power because the lightning had caused a surge which blew out something here on the property. Luckily the apartment management called in an electrician right away, but by morning we still had no power. A good thing it wasn’t very hot! And a good thing we had some glow sticks! They’re cheap and you can set them all over your home to help you find your way around. They’re safer than candles, and the trick is to set them out as navigational guides, like night lights. Then use your lanterns, candles, or flashlights only in the room you happen to be in.

I got up early this morning, still no power, and thought I’d do a long run. But it didn’t go well. I’ve been having trouble breathing since we got back to Houston, and my lungs never cleared on this morning’s run. That wasn’t the whole problem, though. I think I was just more tired than I realized, because at around mile five I realized that I was just deeply exhausted, all the way through. I wanted to push myself to finish at least twelve miles, but I cut it short at nine.

I should know better. A similar thing happened a couple years ago when I got back from vacation and the very next morning went out on a ride where I suffered a major bonk under conditions that shouldn’t have been a problem. It’s funny how you don’t realize how tired you really are after a trip.

But I’m pretty proud of myself for keeping to an exercise schedule while I was on vacation. There were only two days when I didn’t run, hike, or work out in a hotel exercise room. I also got a deep tissue massage, and ate pretty healthy. I can’t get over how in the last few years, it’s gotten so much easier to get a fresh salad, vegetarian meals, and a hotel with a workout room, even in small towns!

While I was gone, my bike was at the shop, and after I test it out on the trainer tomorrow, I think I’ll be ready to hit the road! I got the rear wheel fixed, the chain and cog set replaced, and a general tune-up. So I should be road-worthy now. Anyone up for a ride? Next week, please. Or the week after. I’m tired.

My vacation posts are all up at my vacation blog.
